For Immediate Release:
March 7, 2007: Austin, TX - KillCancer, a group of citizens working to win support for a historic $3 billion increase in cancer cure research
funding in the state, has launched a statewide campaign through its website: www.killcancer.org.
"This is a big idea that can change the world," said KillCancer founder, Cathy Bonner, entrepreneur, business leader and founder of the
national women's history museum. "Our goal is to kill cancer in our lifetime making Texas the global leader in cancer cures during the next decade."
Bonner who conceived the KillCancer campaign after the death of her friend, former Governor Ann Richards, is working with state and legislative leaders,
the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, former Comptroller John Sharp, scientific, medical and higher education institutions, to win support for
$3 billion in general obligation bonds through the passage of a state constitutional amendment.
"Cancer is an epidemic costing billions of dollars and visiting sorrow on millions of Texas families," said Bonner.
"This project would bring together the world's top scientists with the state's cancer treatment and research institutions to work in an effort similar
to the Manhattan Project when Americans split the atom and produced the technology that ended World War II."
The campaign's website www.killcancer.org details the need for cancer research and the impact cancer has on Texans and the Texas economy. Through this website citizens can support the legislation (House Bill 14 and Senate Bill 1292) by contacting their legislators with their own message of support.
Bonner stated,
"It is time to do cancer cure research in a new innovative way. We need to take the handcuffs off the scientists, fund big projects with multi-year commitments, force institutional and interdisciplinary collaborations, and take on the difficult but promising types of cancer cure research."
